L'8 maggio 1962 dopo 8 anteprime va in scena all'Alvin Theatre di Broadway (New York, Usa) la prima ufficiale del musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" con musica e liriche di Stephen Sondheim, libretto di Burt Shevelove e Larry Gelbart. Interpreti: Zero Mostel, John Carradine, Raymond Walburn, Jack Gillford, David Burns, Ruth Kobart, Brian Davies, Preshy Marker, Ronald Holgate e Eddie Phillips. Il musical passa poi Mark Hellinger Theatre e al Majestic Theatre dove chiude il 29 agosto 1964 dopo 964 repliche.
